6 Signs Of Poor Roof Ventilation (And How To Fix It)

6 Signs Of Poor Roof Ventilation (And How To Fix It)

Keeping your roof properly ventilated is very important in every climate. But, the effects of poor insulation can more easily be seen in cooler climates where ice dams and harsh weather can take a toll on your roofing.

Today, we’ll talk about how to spot poor roof ventilation and how you can take steps to resolve the issues.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR ROOF IS VENTILATED

Every roof is ventilated somehow, but depending on the type of roof you have and how old your home is, there are two different types of roof ventilation.

MECHANICAL VENTILATION

When your roof has mechanical ventilation, you have an additional roof vent installed. This type of roof can be found in more modern homes since it gives homeowners greater control over roof ventilation. The vent will require a power source and provides constant airflow with the help of a fan.

NATURAL VENTILATION

If your roof doesn’t have any mechanical ventilation, then it will rely on natural roof venting. Natural roof venting is what occurs when you have roof penetrations, such as vents and chimneys. The pressure that builds up from hot air and cold air mixing will continuously cause the lighter air to rise up out of the vent.

natural ventilation

SIGNS OF POOR VENTILATION

If roof ventilation is poor, then you might see any of the following signs. These signs are extremely important to pay attention to.

ICE DAMS AND ICICLES BUILDING UP

If you notice ice dams and icicles building up, then your roof may not be ventilated properly. Ice dams form when the roofing material can’t manage roof snowmelt. A lack of roof ventilation will not give the hot air a chance to escape, so it melts the snow above hotspots in the roof, which then flows down and freezes at the cold edge of the roof. This problem is a lot more common than you might think, but it’s an easy fix.

ice dams

PROBLEMS WITH YOUR AIR CONDITIONER

Are you noticing issues with your air conditioning? Many people don’t think of it, but it could be because of roof ventilation problems. If the roof isn’t properly ventilated, then it can cause a build-up of hot air. That hot air will cause your home’s HVAC system to work on overdrive all day and drive your electricity bills through the roof while also decreasing the lifespan of the A/C unit.

HOT AND COLD AREAS AROUND YOUR HOME

If you notice that there are hot and cold spots around your home, this is another sign of poor roof ventilation. When air can’t move freely throughout your home, it will leave you feeling chilled in one room and hot in another.

ROOF LEAKS, MOLD, AND MILDEW

roof leaks

Roof leaks, mold, and mildew indicate that roof ventilation isn’t up to par. Hot air will rise freely in a roof with good roof ventilation, but poor roof ventilation will trap hot air and humidity. This causes excess moisture to form on the roof, which can result in leaks and mold growth. This might not cause any problems in the short term, but after a few weeks or months of cloudy, rainy weather, there may be more serious consequences and complications.

UNWANTED PESTS AROUND YOUR HOME

Poor roof ventilation might also cause you to see unwanted pests around your home. Insects like the moist and warm conditions of your roof will be attracted to the hot spots and, if left unchecked, can cause structural problems with your roof. Long-term, this can lead to mice and other small rodents gaining access to your roof system if the problem isn’t fixed.

HIGH HUMIDITY AND CONDENSATION

High humidity and condensation should also be a red flag that roof ventilation isn’t up to par. When hot air gets trapped in your roof, it will cause the roofing system materials to expand and contract as they absorb moisture from the air. This constant expansion and contraction can damage roof material over time, leading to leaks or even roof failure. Measuring humidity is pretty easy to do with today’s modern tools, and it’s easy to remove humidity with a dehumidifier. But, fixing the problem is really important and shouldn’t be avoided.

humidity and condensation

HOW TO FIX YOUR POOR INSULATION AND VENTILATION

Fixing roof ventilation problems is relatively simple for a roofer. The problems can be harder to DIY fix but not impossible. First, you’ll want to make sure that there are enough roof vents in the roof system. As a homeowner, this is hard to check, but let your roofing company know if you feel that you might not have enough roof vents. The number of vents will vary from home to home, but generally speaking, it’s a good rule of thumb to have one roof vent per 300 square feet of attic space.

CHECK YOUR ATTIC AND ROOF INSULATION

After you’ve made sure your roof has a good amount of vents, you can check in on the roof insulation. If your roof is properly insulated, you should be able to feel warm air coming out of the roof vents in the winter months. Roofs that aren’t well-insulated won’t have enough space for all the hot air to escape, so make sure you pay attention to where this escaping warmth is being felt on your roof.

Another sign that you have too little insulation is condensation and ice dams. If you see those pesky ice dams piling up during the winter, be sure to check your insulation. Re-insulating or adding insulation to an attic space is never a bad idea when you think that could be a problem.

7 Types Of Roof Damage To Watch For (Homeowners Guide)

7 Types Of Roof Damage To Watch For (Homeowners Guide)

Roof damage doesn’t always need to be difficult to spot. Sometimes it’s actually pretty easy to find, and if you’re carefully watching out for it, you’ll be able to catch roof damage before it becomes so much of a problem that you have to replace your entire roof system.

Roof damage can lead to:

  • Roof deck rotting
  • Fascia rotting
  • Leaks in your attic
  • Trusses rotting
  • Mold growth in your attic

If you want to keep your roof from becoming a problem and costing you lots of money, then you need to watch for these 7 obvious types of roof damage.

7 TYPES OF ROOF DAMAGE

1. WATER DAMAGE

Finding water damage caused by a leaky roof shouldn’t be too difficult. In fact, you’ll likely be able to know if your roof is leaking the first time it rains after a leak is created. While it’s definitely easy to see the signs of water damage, it can be difficult to pinpoint where that leak is coming into your home. A simple hose test is one way to find leaks. All you need to do is let the hose shoot water across your roof. That way, you can watch inside to quickly pinpoint the location of the leak.

2. MISSING SHINGLES

Missing roof shingles should be fairly easy to spot. You can also look for missing roof shingles in your attic because the light will be able to shine through. After any large storm that brings high wind, you should check if any shingles have blown off your roof.

The nice part about checking for missing shingles is that you can mostly do it from the ground, without having to get up on a ladder. If you don’t have a good view of all parts of your roof, give the pros a call.

missing shingles; types of roof damage

3. DAMAGED GUTTERS

Storms can cause damage to your gutters, but they can also fill up with debris causing them to overflow. When your gutters overflow, they can cause water damage under your siding and lead to more problems and rot around your gutters.

Take the time to clean your gutters 3-4 times each year to ensure that they’re clean and free of any debris. This will also help them to hold up better during rain storms.

types of roof damage: damaged gutters

4. FASCIA AND SOFFIT PROBLEMS

If you notice that your roof is sagging, there’s a good chance it could be caused by an issue with the fascia and/or soffit. The roof system and the fascia hold up your roof, so if either of those is damaged, it can cause a lot of damage to the rest of the roof. And, while a sagging roof might not be a leaking roof, water might start to pool up more than it probably should on your roof.

Pooling water will ultimately lead to leaks and a loss of integrity in your roofing system.

5. CURLING SHINGLES

Curling roof shingles are a sign that your roof is damaged, and you need to take some action. Curling roof shingles can often be a sign that your roof has either blown back due to high winds or that it’s nearing the end of its life. Neither of these is a good thing to find, and you’ll want to contact a contractor as quickly as possible.

Curled shingles will be prone to problems a lot sooner than later. Ideally, you’ll be able to get those shingles replaced ASAP. And, if you think your roof is starting to near the end of its life, then we’d recommend having professionals like the team at MARS Roofing take a look at the roof. We can help you work through the decision to replace the roof and whether or not it’s urgent to have it repaired sooner than later.

types of roof damage; curling shingles

6. GRANULES BUILT UP IN GUTTERS OR NEAR DOWNSPOUTS

Spotting missing granules isn’t always the easiest. In fact, sometimes it can be difficult if you’re looking at the shingles. Instead, you’ll need to look through the gutters, downspouts, and roof edges to determine if granules are missing. With this method, you’ll need to pay attention to the roof edge because that’s where your roof system meets whatever is underneath.

If you notice a lot of loose or chipped-off shingles, then there’s likely an issue. Hail, tree branches rubbing against your roof, or your shingles reaching their expected lifespan, can all cause granule loss. You can also check your roof for granules that have built up around the hips and valleys or in the gutters and downspouts.

7. LEAKS COMING INTO YOUR ATTIC

We covered leaks that come into your home visibly, but what about the leaks that are invisible to the untrained eye? When water comes into your attic through the roof, you might not notice it right away, but it can cause some serious damage over time. Water that goes unnoticed and leaks that don’t get fixed can lead to long-term problems.

The best way to find leaks in your attic is to get up into the attic and start looking for them. Thankfully if there’s a big enough leak, it shouldn’t take too long to spot. But, if it’s a really slow leak, you might not be able to spot the exact point where it’s coming in. We’d recommend reaching out to your local roofing company or MARS Roofing. At Mars, we offer free estimates, and that will include finding where the damage is at.

types of roof damage; leaking attic

Finding damage in your roof is essential if you want to keep your home healthy and ready to handle everything that nature throws at it. Remember, we’re looking for;

  • Water Damage
  • Missing Shingles
  • Damaged Gutter
  • Facia and Soffit Problems
  • Curling Shingles
  • Missing Granules from the Shingles
  • Leaks Coming into the Attic

Not all of these signs will be common on all types of roofs, but they are all common signs of damage on asphalt shingle roofs.
